De Lijn cannot escape the cost-cutting round in the Westhoek either. The transport company must save approximately one million euros, accounting for about five percent of the current budget. Bus lines with low occupancy in particular are being tackled.
“It concerns about ten lines that are affected,” says Koen Meersseman, chairman of the Westhoek transport region. “During off-peak hours, between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., the frequency will be reduced because there are too few travelers. People do not want to run empty buses. That is a well-founded exercise. Every change obviously has an impact, but it remains limited here.”
