Passers-by react in horror and express their condolences to the victim’s relatives.
Although it is unclear how the fatal accident could have happened, they do say that the Oostdijk can be a dangerous road. The speed limit there is 60 kilometers per hour, but there is no guardrail between the road and the water.
There is also virtually no light from lampposts and the asphalt is higher than the narrow verge between the road and the water. This makes it easier for cars to leave the road.
Traces of the accident
During the day, employees of the Hollands Noorderkwartier Water Board are busy cleaning up the last remains. There is still oil floating on the surface of the water.
The tracks of the car tires are still visible along the bank. The car ended up in the water there. A few meters further there is a mud track parallel to the bank towards the road, where the car was dragged out of the water.
