The Champions League is over for PSV this season. The Eindhoven team missed big chances against Bayern Munich on Wednesday evening and lost 1-2 on their own field. Due to the defeat, coach Peter Bosz’s team ends up in 28th place and can focus on the competition and KNVB Cup.
The expectations were that Bayern Munich would play with the strongest eleven in Eindhoven, but that turned out not to be so bad. Top players such as Harry Kane and Michael Olise were on the bench. At PSV, Guus Til returned to striker after an injury, while Anass Salah-Eddine, who also returned, started on the bench.
Even before the first whistle, the crowd chanted ‘all or nothing’. PSV responded. The Eindhoven team went full throttle from the first minute, which quickly resulted in great opportunities. After one minute, Ismael Saibari shot on goal for the first time. Shortly afterwards it was Ivan Perisic, who shot just over after a corner variation.
But it is not without reason that Bayern Munich was number two in the rankings prior to this match. A free kick on the edge of sixteen was shot onto the crossbar by Tom Bischof. PSV did not give in and carried on. After fifteen minutes, Joey Veerman shot from distance. That shot was deflected and went towards the intersection, but was miraculously saved by Jonas Urbig.
Missed opportunities
It was an open match from both sides and it was a miracle that it was still 0-0 after half an hour. PSV gave away a lot of space in the counter, but that also resulted in opportunities. Just before half-time, Perisic seemed to explode the Philips Stadium, but the Croat’s two big chances just missed. PSV deserved a goal in the first half, but it never came.
After the break, Bosz tried to create dominance in midfield by bringing on the young Noah Fernandez for Dennis Man. Yet it was Bayern that found the net first. After 58 minutes, 17-year-old super talent Lennart Karl played PSV player Armando Obispo through the legs, setting teammate Jamal Musiala in front of the goal. The German outwitted Matej Kovár in the short corner.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany did not settle for 0-1 and substituted four guns with Harry Kane, Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry and Alphonso Davies. In the meantime, the scores on other fields turned out favourable, meaning that a draw was enough for PSV at that point.
PSV virtually through
PSV, however, had no idea and fifteen minutes before the end, Ismael Saibari went one-two with Guus Til on the edge of sixteen. The ball came back to the Moroccan and he took a hard shot towards the intersection. This time Urbig had no chance and the Philips Stadium went wild, as PSV was virtually through at 1-1.
Unfortunately the fun was short lived. Five minutes later, Kane got the ball in the box, and that is precisely the place where he should not get the ball. It was a piece of cake for the English striker and so PSV needed another goal to continue. It didn’t fall anymore. As an additional setback, Mauro Júnior also received his second yellow card in the last minute.
Before the match, there was still a small chance that PSV would continue if they lost, but it soon became clear that that was no longer possible.
