For example, one of the affected parents lost a child to a DNA mutation and a second child has the same rare condition. Another misguided customer lost her sister to cancer during her pregnancy.
The suspect had been working on the road for quite some time. After his applications for the necessary certificates were rejected by the competent authorities, he started working anyway. This while the Health Care and Youth Inspectorate had concluded that the man ‘lacked the expertise, safety and quality to properly operate a tissue institution’.
International search warrant
The criminal investigation into the man started in 2019, after it became apparent that administrative law enforcement was not possible. He was arrested three years after an international arrest warrant was issued against the man in 2020. During the subsequent investigation, bodily material was found and seized.
This discovery showed how nonchalantly the man had handled the DNA material. Some of the tubes were not labeled and could no longer be traced. Other tubes were damaged. Due to ‘the inadequate administration and cooperation of the suspect’, even stickered tubes could not be determined with certainty whether they contained matching material.
Material destroyed
To prevent parents from receiving back the material from their own children, but from other children, everything has been destroyed.
The public prosecutor explained the sentence of twelve months in prison (four of which are conditional) and a five-year professional ban with a message for the entire society.
“It should be clear to everyone that you cannot just start a company that promises complicated medical treatments without having the right expertise and organization.”
