It’s a party at Hoofdstraat 8 in Hooghalen. Hairdresser Tineke Bazuin is no less than eighty years old. “I used to think people of eighty were very old,” she laughs. But now that she is eighty herself, she is coming back to that. “I still feel very good!” And that is why Tineke is still active as a hairdresser.
“I think it is a wonderful profession, because you work with people. Different people every time, with different stories. That is never boring.”
Today Hendrik-Jan is sitting in her hairdressing chair. He has been coming to this hair salon, which used to belong to Tineke’s father, for more than eighty years. And later also from her brother. “Above all, it is very pleasant,” says Hendrik-Jan. He thinks it’s fantastic that Tineke still cuts hair. “She does it with kindness. Even if you live to be ninety, if you do something with kindness, age doesn’t matter.”
It is special that Tineke has reached the respectable age of eighty, but the interior of the hair salon is just as special. As soon as you step inside, it’s like going back in time. “Yes, it’s just like a museum,” Tineke agrees. “My dad bought this used in ’38, so I think all this stuff is a hundred years old.”
She can’t say goodbye to it. “I like it, because you can’t buy something like this anymore.”
Tineke has noticed that she has had fewer and fewer customers in recent years. “I have a lot of older customers, and of course they will disappear. For example, I have not been doing perms at all since last year. But as long as there are still people who want to come to me, I will continue.”
