“One euro at the doctor, but with the Porsche in the driveway”: GP puts his finger on the sore spot of our healthcare system

While poverty in our country fluctuates around 11 percent, 1 in 5 Belgians is now entitled to an ‘increased allowance’. This means, among other things, going to the doctor for almost free. What was once intended as targeted protection for the most vulnerable has been fundamentally derailed, according to Jos Vanhoof, general practitioner and chairman of the Flemish Doctors Syndicate. Another doctor also paints a disturbing picture. “Patients consult three specialists for the same thing. It only costs them two euros, but the bill is very expensive for the taxpayer.”
