Chelsea FC and the discarded Raheem Sterling (31) are going their separate ways. The Blues confirmed on Wednesday that they had mutually terminated the attacker’s contract, which was tied until 2027. Although Sterling is likely to be due a severance payment, London media reports believe the move will result in significant savings.
Sterling was the first big name Chelsea brought in in 2022/23 after Todd Boehly took over, handing him one of the biggest contracts in the Premier League. Manchester City received a transfer fee of 56.2 million euros and Sterling received a four-year contract that guaranteed him around 19.6 million euros per season. But things didn’t go well in terms of sport at Stamford Bridge.
Sterling was unable to match his performance for the Skyblues at Chelsea. In 81 appearances he scored 19 goals and 15 assists. Last season he went on loan to arch-rivals Arsenal FC, where things didn’t go any better for Sterling with one goal and five assists in 28 games. The winger was supposed to look for a new club in the summer, but couldn’t find one. So Sterling was completely sidelined and trained with the Blues separately from the first team.
What will happen next for him is still unclear. According to English media reports, he is said to have already found a new club. Most recently, Serie A champions SSC Napoli were the focus of the rumor mill. But Premier League clubs are also said to have shown interest. In any case, the expectations should no longer be as great as when he moved to Chelsea, when his market value was still 70 million euros. This has now dropped to 5 million euros.
