The ongoing slump in consumer spending in Germany is further slowing down the Intersport sports retailer group. The external sales of the approximately 700 affiliated dealers amounted to 3.46 billion euros in the 2024/25 financial year – and thus at the previous year’s level, as the company announced. Compared to the 2022/23 sales record, the minus is a good one percent. Like many other trading companies, Intersport Deutschland’s financial year lasts from the beginning of October to the end of September.
Intersport therefore fell short of its own expectations: a year ago, CEO Alexander von Preen was still expecting growth. Now Intersport actually developed slightly worse than the entire market. In addition to consumer reluctance, Intersport cited difficult market conditions, the weak economy and intense competition as reasons for the development.
Despite the difficult environment, a very good result was achieved, said CFO Thomas Storck. This is also higher than the previous year. The cooperative purchasing association does not provide any more specific profit figures. Von Preen was confident about the current financial year: “We believe in a good year 2026.” This is also because there are many events, including the Winter Olympics and the men’s World Cup.
Intersport continues its expansion course
According to its own information, Intersport is Germany’s largest sports retail group. It recently included around 700 retailers with around 1,400 stores nationwide. More than 400 of these also operate under this name. Intersport is sticking to its long-term goals: by 2030, the association wants to increase its sales in day-to-day business and through acquisitions to around six billion euros – and thus to an expected market share of a good 30 percent.
To achieve this, management is targeting an average growth of more than five percent per year. At least 100 new stores should be added in Germany by 2030. These include very large stores that are aimed more at families and those customers who pay particular attention to price. A total of 56 new stores have been opened since 2023. Intersport boss von Preen is sure: “We will do more than 100”.
