Cat AI Assistant: voice control for construction machines

Caterpillar introduced the Cat AI Assistant at the CES technology trade show in Las Vegas on January 7, 2026. This is an AI system that is integrated directly into construction machines and supports operators using natural language. According to a press release from Caterpillar, the assistant is intended to answer questions, provide personalized recommendations on maintenance and spare parts, and provide safety instructions.

The system runs on NVIDIA’s Jetson Thor platform, an edge AI hardware for real-time processing in industrial environments. According to the NVIDIA blog, the assistant uses NVIDIA Riva for speech recognition and the compact language model Qwen3 4B for processing requests. The data comes from Caterpillar’s own Helios platform, which centrally stores machine information. During a live demonstration at the show, Caterpillar demonstrated the system on a Cat 306 CR mini excavator. The operator was able to activate safety functions and retrieve machine control information using voice commands.

A central area of application for the AI assistant is occupational safety. As the NVIDIA blog shows, operators can use voice commands to set height limits for the excavator arm, for example to avoid collisions with power lines. The system also recognizes people on the construction site and can issue appropriate warnings.

Brandon Hootman, vice president of data and AI at Caterpillar, told TechCrunch that the technology is particularly valuable for inexperienced operators. The construction industry is struggling with a shortage of skilled workers, and the AI assistant can shorten the training period. Another advantage is data collection: According to Hootman, Caterpillar’s machines send around 2,000 data points back to the company per second. This data feeds into digital twins of construction sites and factories that Caterpillar creates using NVIDIA’s Omniverse platform.

From the mine to the construction site – autonomy as the next step

The partnership with NVIDIA builds on Caterpillar’s long-standing experience with autonomous systems in mining. The company has been using autonomous machines in mines for over 30 years and now wants to transfer this expertise to the construction sector. At CES, Caterpillar showcased five autonomous construction machines designed for complex construction site environments.

Caterpillar also announced investments of $100 million over five years for training programs. Of this, $25 million will go toward a Global Workforce Innovation Challenge that aims to identify solutions to prepare workers for AI-powered industrial systems. The off-board version of the Cat AI Assistant, i.e. use outside the machine cabin via apps and websites, is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2026. According to Caterpillar, the in-cab version is in the final validation phase.
