SC Paderborn lost 0:2 (0:1) at Holstein Kiel and was therefore unable to take advantage of mistakes made by the promotion competition from Elversberg and Gelsenkirchen. The result became irrelevant in the final phase because Paderborn’s Calvin Brackelmann was injured after a header duel and had to be carried off the pitch after lengthy treatment.
Steven Skrzybski made it 1-0 for Kiel in the 18th minute. Lasse Rosenboom increased the score to 2-0 in the second half (67th).
Before the game, the Paderborn supporters provided the slogan for the encounter: “No star on the field and never big money,” was written on a banner in the guest block. Holstein Kiel and SC Paderborn are among the smaller clubs in the second division, but they have nevertheless developed a good reputation in recent years. Both clubs stand for active football and have produced good coaches.
Kiel needs time to get going, but takes the lead
In the first minutes of the game in Kiel, only Ralf Kettemann’s Paderborn team confirmed this reputation. Again and again they combined nicely via the busy Laurin Curda and his right side. It was he who created the first good chance with a backheel pass in the 7th minute. Sebastian Klaas failed from 16 meters past Kiel goalkeeper Jonas Krumrey.
Marcel Rapp’s Kiel team only gradually found their way into the game. And they took advantage of their first good chance to take the lead. Once again the focus was on the Paderborn team’s right side, but this time because Curda and colleagues behind John Tolkien escaped. His cross from the baseline found Phil Harres in the middle, who extended. Finally, Skrzybski headed in from close range. Dennis Seimen in the Paderborn goal got to the ball, but was no longer able to parry.
Kiel plays more forcefully forward
The Kiel team wanted even more, you could see that after the break. In the first minute of the second half, Jonas Therkelsen played the ball twice in Paderborn’s penalty area, but with no result. In the 52nd minute it was the busy Therkelsen who presented the next good chance. Niklas Niehoff shot, but Sein made a strong save.
Fifteen minutes later, the Kiel team rewarded themselves for their efforts. After a low cross from Skrzybski and a lay-up from Harres, the ball came via a detour to substitute Lasse Rosenboom, who sank a rebound from five meters into the goal. The 2-0 was deserved at this point, even though Paderborn had significantly more possession of the ball. Their attempts simply weren’t compelling enough.
VAR concedes Paderborn’s connection
In order to finally become really dangerous, Paderborn Kiels needed help. After a goal kick from Krumrey, David Zec played a catastrophic cross pass back into the middle. Paderborn’s Klaas scored. His celebration was short-lived, however, because Steffen Tigges, who had decisively disrupted Zec, had already run into the penalty area before the goal kick was taken.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t the end of the game. In the 88th minute, Paderborn central defender Brackelmann was injured when his neck landed on the ground after a header duel with Rosenboom. The dazed player had to be rolled off the pitch on a stretcher.
