According to English reports, Oliver Glasner has to expect early retirement as Crystal Palace coach after his angry speech against his own club. The comments of the 51-year-old former Bundesliga coach had angered the club’s management team, it was said in the “Guardian”, among others.
“Palace is considering firing its coach after he publicly stated that the board had let him and his players down,” wrote the Daily Mail, and Sky Sports also reported, citing its own information. Glasner recently announced that he would not be extending his contract. This is valid until the end of this season. However, the Austrian did not stop at this announcement, but then publicly settled accounts with the club’s management in a remarkable way. The trigger was the planned transfer of top performer Marc Guehi to Manchester City before the Premier League game against AFC Sunderland.
“I have absolutely no understanding of selling our captain one day before a game,” Glasner said, among other things: “If your heart is ripped out twice in one year, first with Eze, one day before a game in the summer, and with your captain one day before a game – I can’t understand that.” He was referring to Eberechi Eze’s move to Arsenal FC in August last year. He has been active in football for over 30 years and has never experienced anything like this. “We feel let down,” emphasized Glasner: “No support.”
Nothing remains of the former euphoria and happiness. Glasner, former coach in the Bundesliga at VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, took over the team in February 2024 and then led it to the club’s greatest successes. Crystal Palace had won the English Cup and the so-called Community Shield, the English Super Cup. But things haven’t been going well in terms of sport for weeks, and the London club’s last win to date was on December 11th with a 3-0 win in the Conference League against FC Shelbourne from Ireland. After the 2-1 defeat against Sunderland on Saturday, Glasner emphasized in his analysis that there was obviously no point in discussing such things behind closed doors.
