The mood at the top game in the Olympic Stadium quickly changed. Fans of both clubs reacted to an incident before the game with unusual measures.

fans of Hertha BSC and Schalke 04 protested through collective silence at the second division top game in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium. From the fans’ perspective, the protest was directed against police actions that they found to be disproportionate.

Hertha BSC announced that there had been an incident between fans and the police in front of the stadium before the game. Details of this incident or a response from the police were initially not available.

There was a tense atmosphere in the stadium. At times, denigrating chants against security forces could be heard. More than 70,000 spectators filled the arena.

After about 20 minutes, large parts of the Hertha fans left the east curve. This added to the already oppressive atmosphere in the stadium.

The Hertha BSC fan association complained in a press release about disproportionate house searches of the club’s supporters. These are said to have taken place a few days ago.
