Should Mexico and Canada withdraw as World Cup hosts? Sky presenter Frank Buschmann makes a suggestion.

The football presenter and former basketball player Frank Buschmann reflected on the possible reactions of Europeans to US politics on the Instagram platform. “I just can’t get it out of my head. What a strong sign it would be if the Europeans all decided not to take part in the World Cup, Mexico and Canada would step down as hosts and everyone would play an alternative tournament together in Canada and Mexico in the summer,” he wrote.

He is aware that this will not happen, but thinks the idea is good. “The world has completely different problems than football and it’s always nicer to separate sport and politics, but somehow that’s becoming more and more difficult for me,” he continued. By this he does not mean that athletes should solve the problems of politics. “But somehow too much feels wrong around the USA right now.”

A CDU politician had previously suggested canceling the World Cup. The foreign policy spokesman for the Union parliamentary group, Jürgen Hardt (CDU), told the “Bild” on Friday: “A cancellation of the tournament would only be considered as a last resort in order to bring President Trump to his senses on the Greenland issue.” Hardt pointed out that US President Donald Trump had already made it clear “how important the World Cup is to him.”

Sports Minister of State Christiane Schenderlein (CDU) expressed caution regarding possible consequences in connection with the World Cup. “The associations responsible for this are responsible, in this case DFB and FIFA,” she explained to “Bild”. The World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026 in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Germany has qualified.
