Hamburger SV and Anssi Suhonen are finally parting ways. As expected, the 25-year-old Finn is moving to Odense Boldklub in Denmark, where he has a contract until 2029. Six months before the end of the contract, HSV is reportedly receiving a small fee in the five-figure range. For the homegrown player, who moved to the Hanseatic youth team shortly after his 16th birthday in January 2017, the chapter in Hamburg ends finally and without the breakthrough he had hoped for.
After a promising start to the 2021/22 season, when Suhonen contributed two goals and two assists in 18 games, his market value rose to 900,000 euros. However, the 1.75 meter tall midfielder was unable to establish himself in the starting line-up in the long term; he made a total of 52 appearances in three and a half years. A loan to Jahn Regensburg was supposed to help for the second half of the 2024/25 season, but it was just as unspectacular as the last one at Östers IF in Sweden.
“During his time with us, Anssi developed from a young up-and-coming player to an established professional. Unfortunately, he repeatedly had to struggle with injuries along the way and was therefore rarely able to consistently utilize his potential over a long period of time. After these setbacks, he always fought back impressively. Anssi is a player who always gives his all and leaves his heart on the pitch. We will always remember him fondly in this way. We wish him much success and, above all, good health on his further journey,” said sports director Claus Costa.

Suhonen said goodbye with a big thank you: “HSV has become my second home in almost ten years. This is where I took my first steps in professional football and was able to gain a lot of experience. I am of course especially grateful to the incredible fans, but also to all the coaches, teammates, junior staff and the office. I will always remember my time at HSV as a formative part of my career.”
At Odense, Suhonen is now starting a new beginning under coach Alexander Zorniger, who has several professionals who were formerly active in Germany in his squad. Fiete Arp came from Kiel in the summer, Jona Niemiec from Düsseldorf and Noah Ganaus from Regensburg. Former Werder professional Tom Trybull has been under contract in Odense since 2023.
“I can’t wait to get started,” added Suhonen. “I’m looking forward to getting to know the team and playing with them. The Danish league is very physical and at a high level.”
