At the European Handball Championships in Oslo, Slovenia and Montenegro set a historic goal record. The previous record from 2016 was significantly exceeded.
The handball players from Slovenia and Montenegro delivered a historic goal festival at the European Championships in Oslo. A total of 81 goals were scored in Slovenia’s dramatic 41:40 victory. This not only exceeded the previous European Championship record, but also broke the World Cup record.
According to the European Handball Federation (EHF), the previous record at a European Championship was 77 goals. Belarus and Iceland set this in 2016, when Belarus won 39:38. The World Cup record of 80 goals from 2003 – when Russia won 42:38 against Romania – is now a thing of the past.
For the favored Slovenians, the opening victory means an excellent starting position for the rest of the tournament. In the remaining preliminary round games they will face Switzerland and the Faroe Islands and now have a good chance of making it into the main round.
