Slovenia celebrates the 41:40 win against Montenegro

As of: January 16, 2026 10:32 p.m

In Group D of the European Handball Championship, Slovenia celebrated a last-minute win against Montenegro. A new goal record was set at 41:40 (19:18) in Oslo – there have never been so many goals at a European Championship or World Cup.

Borut Mackovsek scored the decisive goal for the victory when he made it 41:39 with 21 seconds left. Previously, the Slovenian team was able to rely primarily on Flensburg professional Domen Novak and Domen Makuc (FC Barcelona), who each scored nine times. Branko Vujovic scored eleven goals for Montenegro, including the record goal to make the final score 40:41.

New high for the European Championships and World Cup

According to the European Handball Federation (EHF), the previous European Championship record was from the European Championship year 2016. At that time, Belarus beat Iceland 39:38. Vujovic’s last goal also exceeded the World Cup record of 80 goals from 2003, when Russia beat Romania 42:38.

Thanks to the narrow victory, the Slovenians have a good chance of moving into the main round. In the next two preliminary round games, coach Mirko Skoko’s team will face Switzerland and the Faroe Islands; Montenegro is already under pressure against the Faroe Islands on the second matchday.
