Bavarian derby at the start of the second half of the third division. FC Ingolstadt lands an early double blow, Regensburg’s offensive leaves a lot to be desired. After a difficult first half of the season, the Schanzer can overtake Jahn on matchday 20.
After the worst first half of the season in the club’s history, FC Ingolstadt urgently needed a sense of success at the start of the second half of the season in the derby against hosts Jahn Regensburg. With the double strike from Jonas Scholz (20th) and Julian Kügel (23rd), it looked like it was going to happen at first. Even after the break, the FCI was the better team, Jahn clearly didn’t do enough offensively. Despite a period of pressure from Regensburg at the end, the guests were able to score again thanks to Marcel Costly (90th). Jahn Regensburg deservedly lost 3-0 against FC Ingolstadt.
There are only a little more than 50 kilometers as the crow flies between Regensburg and Ingolstadt and the two clubs were also close together in the table: Jahn was only two points ahead of the Schanzer, who were in 20th place with 22 points, just one point ahead of the relegation zone. The derby was an important six-point game for both teams.
Two new additions were on the pitch right from the start. Michael Wimmer allowed John Posselt, who moved to Jahn from TSV Havelse after a canceled loan, to make his starting debut in his first game. Sabrina Wittmann gave Greek newcomer Georgios Antzoulas the chance to prove himself in defense.
Ingolstadt starts with a double blow
Jahn Regensburg immediately tried to gain control of the game with the kick-off. However, Ingolstadt played on equal terms, so that the two teams neutralized each other in midfield in the early stages. Until the 20th minute: Kaygin took a free kick high into the six-yard box, where Scholz headed the ball into the goal with great force. The guests led 1-0.
But that wasn’t enough of a dream start for the FCI. A short time later (23rd) came the double blow. Costly intercepted a bad pass from Gebhardt in the penalty area and went to the baseline. Wurm wanted to clear the cross, but involuntarily passed it on to Kügel. He just had to push in from close range – 2-0.
Weak Regensburg offensive
Jahn initially reacted well to the deficit. High pressing, controlled passes, looking for gaps. However, the hosts lacked penetration and had to go into halftime with a deficit.
After the break, Jahn coach Wimmer brought fresh energy with the substitution of Leo Mätzler for Nick Seidel. But even when Regensburg was moving forward, the Schanzer’s chances of scoring were prevented, also due to the good defensive work of new signing Antzoulas. At the other end, Costly shot past the goal three times.
Sabrina Wittmann can cheer
Regensburg’s new signing John Posselt had to make way for Lucas Hermes (58th) after a few good but ineffective actions. However, Regensburg still failed to achieve anything offensively. Wimmer responded by subbing striker Florian Dietz for defensive Leopold Wurm. Shortly afterwards, Jahn came in front of the opposing goal, but Hottmann’s rather harmless finish (79′) landed on the side netting.
Even a period of pressure from the hosts in the final minutes was unable to secure any points for Regensburg. On the contrary: Shortly before the end (90′), Ingolstadt made everything clear. After Costly made an important follow-up in midfield, Christensen passed back to Costly, who scored from five meters after a hook. The otherwise reserved Sabrina Wittmann cheered exuberantly on the sidelines.
With a four point lead over the relegation places, FC Ingolstadt has now at least built up a small cushion and has moved past Jahn Regensburg. They urgently need to work on their offensive ideas in order to be able to move further from 14th place in the table.
