Argentina has recurring and even seasonal crises. In summer, with the heat, fires in Patagonia are something that is repeated year after year, amplified by the apathy of officials and the political intrigues behind the fire. This January 5, the disaster began in Puerto Patriada, Chubut, and has already devoured 12 thousand hectares of forests and scrub without the 600 agents deployed in the area being able to extinguish it so far. The first tests detected the presence of combustible gases in the area and do not rule out the possibility that there were two simultaneous outbreaks. Prosecutor Carlos Díaz Mayer clarified that the real estate motivation is considered unlikely, but politics immediately put in its tail with its hypotheses for all tastes.
The opposition raised the irresponsible theory of Israeli citizens as promoters of the fire, while since the Government they targeted the Mapuche community without any evidence. The governor of Chubut, Ignacio Torres, distanced himself from both lines of argument and spoke of “ecocide.” Within La Libertad Avanza, Javier Milei and his vice Victoria Villarruel took advantage of the crisis to continue fighting. She traveled to the area to snub the President, who was absent from the beginning. In the Casa Rosada they claim that he requested the presidential helicopter to travel and that they denied it, something that Villarruel denies.
The best thing Milei could do, however, was to upload an image of himself with a brigade member in the middle of the flames to his networks, but immediately, through the President’s agenda, it was learned that that poster of heroism had been created with Artificial Intelligence. He was never in the place.
The fire in the South does not stop. Neither do the gaffes of our leaders.
