A man straight from the “Chinese Army” appeared at the Kuopio World Ski Championships over the weekend.

It was about Entemake Maowulietibiekewhose club team was marked as China Military Ski Team on the start list.

The head coach of the Chinese national team, Finnish Glenn Lindholmopens the issue. Maowulietiebieke and his compatriots Qiang Wang represented the army team for a long time before it was disbanded. That team doesn’t even exist anymore.

– Today, athletes train in provincial teams if they are not with the national team, Lindholm clarifies.

– Before, they were in the army, but they didn’t really do the army stuff, they went skiing.

Chinese skiing is managed in a very fast-paced manner. In the country, the focus is on the Olympic years, and outside of them the investment fades.

– From the beginning of 2025, skiing started again. In May, I went along myself, and we started all over again. It reflects the Chinese system. Let’s hold the Olympics and then take a 2-3 year break, Lindholm states.

Qiang Wang is the biggest star of the Chinese national skiing team and an Olympic hope. He can withstand even international comparisons on sprint distances.

Wang unexpectedly skied to the podium in the World Cup sprint in March 2022. In Kuopio, the speed was enough for the sprint WC final. Pasi Liesimaa

According to Lindholm, Wang is preparing for Milan with the support of the Norwegians, but lives in China.

– He lives where there are good conditions, i.e. in different training centers. He is almost always high, at 1,500 meters.

In total, the Chinese cross-country team will send four women and two men to the Olympics. Lindholm’s employment contract in China ends after the Games.
