It was Toon Aerts who entered the field first. Thibau Nys took over that position just before the first descent of the circuit. The blisteringly high pace that the outgoing champion maintained ensured that a leading group formed with four riders at the start of the second round: Nys, Aerts, Emiel Verstrynge and Michael Vanthourenhout. Joran Wyseure was 5 seconds behind, followed by Niels Vandeputte with Lander Loockx.
After 13 minutes of cross, Nys lost again, Vanthourenhout followed quickly. After 21 minutes Nys accelerated again, Vanthourenhout cracked while behind him Niels Vandeputte was joined by Emiel Verstrynge. At the start of the fifth of a total of seven laps, Thibau Nys had created a lead of 16 seconds over the duo Emiel Verstrynge/Michael Vanthourenhout. Niels Vandeputte rode in 29 seconds, Joran Wyseure in 50 seconds and Lander Loockx in 52 seconds. Nys made a mistake in a descent and lost some lead.
Two laps from the end, Nys was only 6 seconds ahead of Verstrynge and 10 seconds ahead of Vanthourenhout. Verstrynge continued to apply a lot of pressure and in the final lap almost hit the rear wheel of Nys, who was only certain of a second Belgian title in a row in the final straight.
