The Baskets Bonn narrowly lost a defensive BBL game in Munich. The decision was made in the final minute.

The Baskets Bonn narrowly lost to leaders Bayern Munich 63:66 (12:15, 12:18, 15:13, 24:20) on matchday 15 of the Basketball Bundesliga and thus fell back to sixth place in the table. However, with 18:14 points, this would be enough to reach the quarter-finals of the playoffs. However, the Bonn team played two more games than their pursuers Ludwigsburg.

The rate of three is underground on both sides

The Baskets did not get off to a catastrophic start like they did in their anniversary game against Munich shortly before Christmas. They were already down by 14 points after the first quarter. In the next meeting, the game was closer this time – especially because both offenses didn’t want to hit their threes properly. The front runner from Munich pulled away a bit with a few lay-ups. But the Bonn team fought their way into the game and reduced the lead to 12:15 at the end of the quarter.

The second period started like the first ended: with a tight game and points on both sides, but no shine. The three-pointer rate remained weak until half-time – the guests from Bonn only hit one out of 13 attempts, while Munich’s rate was only slightly better with one out of twelve shots. However, the Baskets also allowed themselves a small pointless run in the middle of the quarter, so that Munich pulled away to 33:24 by the break.

Bonn stays in touch

The second half started with a curiosity: Due to a technical foul against Bonn immediately before half-time, Andreas Obst was allowed to take a free throw, which he missed. Only then did the second half start, but the game was not very high-class. The Baskets at least used several quick countermoves to get within three points.

As well as Bonn’s defense worked, the offense did just as badly. The baskets repeatedly missed their shot attempts, so that the Munich team was able to maintain their lead despite their own weak offensive. Above all, the threes did not fall for either team: Munich was at five percent, Bonn at six. Bonn went into the final period with a lead of 39:46.

A crime thriller – with a better ending for Munich

The last quarter also remained more of a gourmet feast for defensive players basketball – Both teams forced their opponents to make missed throws and lose the ball. The game would be decided by fouls, free throws and rebounds – until suddenly the three-pointers were made on both sides: Joel Aminu, on the other side Andreas Obst and Aminu again suddenly carried the audience away.

Around two minutes before the end, Bonn equalized and there were signs of a thriller. Of all people, the rather weak Xavier Rathan-Mayes put Bayern back in the lead with a wide three-pointer and ensured the final score.
