This year, the Red Cross is organizing 424 blood collections in our province. But the period around the New Year is always a period with fewer donors, says Vincent Verbeecke of the Red Cross. “People have the flu. It’s busy at work. That’s why people donate less blood.”
What is striking is that more and more millennials are donating blood. This may be due to last year’s ‘Bloedserieus campaign’, according to Verbeke. “Through the campaign, students encouraged each other to donate blood and this resulted in new blood and plasma donors.”
In our province there were 3,000 new donors.
