Kessler wants to “optimize the squad”

According to a report from the TV channel “Sky”, 1. FC Köln has their eye on Freiburg winger Eren Dinkçi. Accordingly, discussions are taking place about a possible transfer of the 24-year-old to the cathedral townspeople; a loan deal is conceivable. The Bremen native moved from his training club Werder to Breisgau in the summer of 2024 for a fee of five million euros. Due to injury, he has only made eight Bundesliga appearances in coach Julian Schuster’s team so far this season.

Dinkçi was not part of the squad for Freiburg’s successful start to the year on Saturday against Hamburger SV; problems with his hip, among other things, had temporarily sidelined the professional since the fall of last year. He had previously played three times in the Europa League and once in the DFB Cup, where he scored a goal in the first round. The exact length of his contract with SCF has not been communicated; Dinkçi’s former maximum market value of 12 million euros had recently been halved.
With Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, newcomer Cologne presented the first newcomer of the winter at the beginning of the year. FC sports director Thomas Kessler had promised further transfers during the week. “We said that we would make one or two adjustments to the squad – which is also due to the injury situation.” Coach Lukas Kwasniok said: “If we feel like we have to step up and the door opens, we’ll do it.”
“We’re looking at how we can optimize the squad. (…) The transfer market is still moving, things are picking up a bit now. (…) Players who aren’t playing at supposedly better clubs with better financial opportunities are looking for match practice for the second half of the season with a view to a World Cup. That’s our target market,” Kessler continued. According to Sky, Dinkçi could be one such destination. In Freiburg, the Turk competes in his position with players such as Cyriaque Irié, Niklas Beste and Derry Scherhant.
