For decades, psychotherapy was based – with solid foundations – on the word as a privileged way of accessing the unconscious. Naming, historicizing, resignifying. The problem is not that work, but believing that it is enough for all levels of the psyche.
Much of early emotional experience is not organized into words. It is inscribed as an image, bodily sensation, emotional climate. They are implicit memories that are not remembered: they are reactivated. And there, verbal language usually arrives late or falls short.
The Directed Dream starts from an uncomfortable premise for certain classic frameworks: the unconscious does not always allow itself to be challenged by discourse. Many times he responds better when summoned in his own language: the symbolic one.
The image does not argue or argue. Appears. A devastated landscape, a closed house, a threatening animal condense into seconds conflicts that can remain for years rotating on the plane of the word. In dreams, the patient does not relate a scene: he inhabits it. He moves within it, makes decisions, confronts himself, protects himself, transforms.
That movement produces real clinical effects. Not because of suggestion or catharsis, but because it activates psychic circuits different from those of the conscious story. Where the discourse becomes defensive, the image is usually direct.
This approach requires a profound change in the role of the therapist. It is no longer enough to listen and interpret. The professional becomes a technical guide of the imaginative process, responsible for the framing, rhythm and psychological security of the patient. It is not improvisation or free fantasy: it is technique, training and clinical ethics.
Directed Dreaming does not replace speech. He puts her in her place. He integrates it into a broader work, capable of reaching areas where discourse is exhausted or becomes circular.
In times of discourse-saturated clinics, perhaps the question is not how much more to talk, but What other languages are we willing to listen to?. Because when words are not enough, continuing to insist only on them is also a technical decision. And not always the most effective.
