A co-favorite is missing from the first Grand Slam of the year. She has the best memories of Melbourne.

Chinese tennis player Zheng Qinwen will not take part in the Australian Open in Melbourne this year. The former world number four had surgery on her elbow due to persistent problems. She had also missed the US Open. Zheng hasn’t played a match since the end of September.

Zheng said on social media that the decision was difficult for her. She emphasized that Melbourne was a special place for her, where she won her first main draw match at a Grand Slam and had her best experiences. Two years ago she reached the final of the tournament but lost to Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets.

Her biggest success to date was winning the gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games.
