The central defender takes responsibility for Colombo’s advantage: “A serious mistake”. And on the injury: “It’s over, thanks to the doctors”
Matteo Gabbia doesn’t speak like other footballers. He has more awareness, much more diplomacy, more honesty. At the end of Milan-Genoa, he spoke clearly about Lorenzo Colombo’s goal: he took responsibility and – rare – explained the details of his mistake. The key phrase: “It’s right that I take my responsibilities because we lost two points due to this situation, which we work on every day.”
what happened
—
Here it is, the situation. “I should have covered the advance more, but instead I concentrated on marking and let myself be anticipated. It’s a mistake, it’s serious, I’m trying to improve but unfortunately it happens sometimes.” Reviewing the action, it becomes clear. Gabbia marks Colombo in the center of the area and, in fact, focuses a lot on the melee, on staying between the Genoa striker and the goal. When Colombo cuts towards the near post to get to Malinovskyi’s ball, Gabbia slips and loses the decisive two metres.
cage on the injury

Gabbia also spoke about the match and his injury, a hyperextension injury to his left knee which kept him out until Cagliari-Milan last Friday: “It’s a match that makes us go home with a bad taste in our mouths, we’re disappointed. We wanted to win. The match moved onto a somewhat difficult track, even though we started quite well. In the second half we tried to get it back on its feet but unfortunately the goal came too late. It must help us grow. We’ll do the right self-criticism for this match, me first and foremost, and we will try to make up for it on Sunday afternoon. The injury is over, the doctors and staff were good at resolving it, I have to thank them.”
cage, fofana and the scudetto
—
I understand how Gabbia thinks, right? He’s not the type to criticize a teammate, either as an outburst or as a strategy. And so, it is logical that he says this about Fofana, attacked on social media for his slip in front of the goal: “Youssouf knows what we think of him, he doesn’t have to tell us anything, he knows that if he needs us, we are there. There won’t be any problems: we’re all rowing on the same side. There’s never an accusation against someone, but it’s always the group that gets the results.” The last answer is a classic: “The scudetto? Honestly, we look at ourselves. When you play for this club, you have to have the ambition and desire to win every match and aspire to the best positions. We have to work every day to be up to representing this shirt and this club. We have to look at ourselves and do better every day and every match.” Allegri may have said this.
