The “Confirmity Gate” theory on “Stranger Things” caused Netflix to collapse. Fans were hoping for a ninth episode – what’s behind the speculation?
After the last episode of the hit series “Stranger Things” was released on New Year’s Day, rumors about another episode quickly circulated on social media. This became known in the community as the so-called “Confirmity Gate” theory. Briefly explained: Parts of the community expected a ninth episode of the fifth season, which would clarify the “misleading” series ending and should appear on January 7, 2026. Countless fans of the Netflix production excitedly opened the streaming service’s website, which caused it to crash.
This is what the “Confirmity Gate” theory is all about
In detail, the theory is based on the epilogue of the eighth episode. In this one there is a time jump of 18 months and you see the group of friends getting together for a final round of Dungeons and Dragons. The fate of the character Eleven is left open. According to Confirmity Gate, this epilogue presents a false reality in which Vecna’s influence has not been broken. The group is therefore living in an illusion. Fans particularly point to the symmetry in the final scenes and the characters breaking the fourth wall. They also refer to a strangely “normal” feeling at the end of the episode, which seemed to some like a supposed happy ending.
Fan theory caused Netflix to collapse
On the night of January 7, 2026 at 2:00 a.m., supporters of the ideology tuned into Netflix. The theory probably had more followers than previously assumed – because, according to “Downdetector”, the provider’s site collapsed for ten minutes – at least in the USA. Instead of the new episode they were hoping for, the loyal fans saw a message with an error code and the note that there was “a lot to discover on the homepage”.
The creators of the series – Matt and Ross Duffer – commented on the misinformation that exists online about “Stranger Things” in an interview with “Variety” before this new fan theory emerged. The Duffer brothers emphasized that they could “spend hours refuting these untruths.” Netflix also tried to refute the rumors. Since the release of the last episode, the show’s Instagram handle has featured the following message in all caps: “All episodes of Stranger Things are now available.”
The fan base was not deterred by this and still hoped that their speculation would come true – until the great disappointment set in in front of the screens and their illusion evaporated into thin air.
New projects from the screenwriters as possible consolation for the community?
Anyone longing for more “Stranger Things” will not be disappointed in 2026. The animated spin-off “Stranger Things: Tales from 85” is set to appear soon. But that’s not all: Two more projects will be launched on Netflix in which the “Stranger Things” makers will be involved as executive producers. One is “The Boroughs” and the other is “Something Really Bad Is Gonna Happen”. For fans of the completed series, the former is particularly interesting, as it could be a kind of reverse “Stranger Things”.
Because: The production will not be about children, but about a group of seniors who will also be exposed to a monstrous threat. This will try to steal the protagonists’ remaining time.
Netflix also announced a making-of season 5 of the mystery series. The production entitled “One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5” by Martina Radwan is scheduled to appear on the on-demand platform on January 12th – perhaps the mysteries of the final episode will be solved in the behind-the-scenes material.
