(toskanews) – Arrives in Italian cinemas on January 8th Siratthe film that won the Jury Prize at the last Cannes Film Festival, nominated for four European Film Awards and who will represent Spain at the Oscars 2026. Directed by Oliver Laxeco-produced by Almodovar and played by Sergi Lópezis a lysergic journey into the desert, with techno notes, which suddenly changes direction and surprises the viewer.
The protagonist is a man in search of his missing daughter who reaches a rave in the Moroccan desert together with his son. The two join a group of ravers heading to another party and their search turns into an unimaginable odyssey. The director explained: «Sirat it’s an adventure film, and the adventures represent an internal search. So it is a film that has a physical and a metaphysical dimension. The word Siratwhich is widely used in Arab culture, represents precisely this path, personal, spiritual development.”
The actor Sergi López said about the physical, mental and metaphysical journey undertaken for this film: «In In all jobs, actors and actresses undertake a double journey, physical and mentalthere is something that changes inside us, which is still a mystery to me, you enter a kind of trance. And in this film it is even deeper, here the metaphysical dimension is particularly strong because the journey is also a meditation on death.”
In the universe created by Oliver Laxe, which seems a transfiguration of the reality we live in, solidarity seems the only anchor. «It’s true that in the film we are told: well, life is a Sirata journey that you don’t know where it will take you, for which we are never prepared, and the only thing that can save us are others” said López, while the director stated: “We are in a moment in which society is so dehumanized that the only solution is to be more human.”
