BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – After the attack on the Berlin power grid, several media outlets reported on a second letter of confession from the suspected perpetrators. There was initially no confirmation from investigators. The letter rejected speculation about the involvement of foreign actors. The “Tagesspiegel”, “Bild” and the rbb, among others, reported.
The letter states, among other things: “Regarding the circulating allegations of an alleged “false flag action” by a foreign state, we say clearly: These speculations are nothing more than an attempt to cover up our own powerlessness.” The fact that local people are able to attack infrastructure does not fit into the security narrative of politicians and authorities. The group’s motives are neither new nor secret. “Anyone who now claims that there must inevitably be a foreign secret service behind every form of sabotage is denying the reality of social conflicts within,” it continued.
The letter also stated that their action was “not directed against people,” but rather against an infrastructure that destroys the environment every day.
The group acknowledged itself in its first letter
As a result of the arson attack, which was allegedly motivated by left-wing extremism, 45,000 households and 2,200 companies were initially without electricity in southwest Berlin on Saturday morning. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office in Karlsruhe has taken over the investigation. From their point of view, there is suspicion of unconstitutional sabotage, membership in a terrorist organization, arson and disruption of public operations.
In an initial letter of responsibility, one of the left-wing extremist “volcano groups”, which is said to have repeatedly carried out arson attacks on public infrastructure since 2011, especially in Berlin and Brandenburg, claimed responsibility for the crime.
“No clues so far”
In the wake of the arson attack, there is speculation on the Internet that Russia and one of its secret services were responsible. With regard to speculation, Berlin’s police vice-president Marco Langner emphasized: “There is no evidence of this so far.” And further: “The checks that we have carried out in cooperation with the BKA point to this group of volcanoes – and very clearly. We see this letter of confession as authentic and can therefore say that it comes from the left-wing extremist area.”/sak/DP/zb
