Silas is leaving VfB Stuttgart and will from now on strengthen Mainz 05 in the relegation battle. The offensive player brings a lot of power but little match practice.
After six and a half eventful years, it’s all over: Silas, who recently played little role in coach Sebastian Hoeneß’s considerations, is leaving VfB Stuttgart and joining Mainz 05. The clubs have agreed not to disclose the transfer modalities.
Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert said about the 27-year-old newcomer: “We are very pleased that we were able to win Silas for Mainz 05. Everyone immediately associates him with speed, assertiveness in a 1-1 draw and goal threat, which he has already impressively demonstrated at VfB Stuttgart. Silas is a reinforcement for our squad and brings new facets to our offensive game.”
Silas won the hearts of VfB fans
Silas moved from the then second division club Paris FC to Stuttgart in the summer of 2019 and took the hearts of VfB fans by storm with his enormous speed, his dribbling skills and his goal-scoring ability. In 132 appearances in the Bundesliga, 2nd Bundesliga and DFB Cup, he scored 35 goals and prepared 21 more.
However, for his combination football, coach Sebastian Hoeneß increasingly relied on players with stronger play and defense, such as Chris Führich, Jamie Lewelling and Deniz Undav. Silas therefore moved to Serbian club Red Star Belgrade on loan in 2024. He contributed five goals and an assist to Belgrade’s championship title, but was unable to convince club officials to sign him.
In the current season, the national player from Congo (20 appearances, one goal) only made it into the squad on the first Bundesliga matchday (1:3 against SC Freiburg) and is still out of action.
