The week started with freezing temperatures all over the country. The thermometers also dipped well below freezing in southern Finland, because the week that started on January 5th is clearly colder than usual in the whole of Finland.

Presenter Ellen Jokikunnas tells Iltalehti how they have enjoyed the frost and winter nights a lot at their home, especially Ralph– with the boy. Since he was born on Sunday, Filipino Ralph got to try skiing for the first time.

– Then we made ice soap bubbles outside and threw hot water into the air and watched as it vaporized and thinned into the sky. All these kinds of snow and frost, which are new things now, says Jokikunnas.

Jokikunnas says that the skis were already ready last winter. Ralph boy’s first winter in Finland, however, contained a lot of all kinds of new things and there was no suitable moment or weather for skiing then.

– He got on skis for the first time only this winter. It was super fun and he really liked it.

– It has been so cold today that you couldn’t really ski outside, but maybe tomorrow you will be able to test your skis again.

In addition, the snow has been enjoyed especially when going downhill. Sledding and tobogganing are perhaps also in store for the epiphany. Jokikunnas remembers that last winter Ralph might not have experienced such severe frosts.

– It was a bit strange when he takes the glove off his hand and says “mom, my fingers are freezing”. I answered that I know, you have to wear gloves here, Jokikunnas laughs.

– But it’s wonderful when you can enjoy a proper winter, he adds.

Of course, Ralph has already gotten used to the usual winter weather. According to Jokikunnas, Ralph still likes the snow a lot and is happy with its result. The importance of dressing in layers has become clear through experience.

– Little by little, even the child has learned to understand that even if it’s freezing hot outside, you can’t take off your clothes, as happened a couple of times in the first winter, says Jokikunnas.

The joys of winter and experiencing them with the child have been eye-opening for the mother as well.

– Through a child, you can enjoy winter in a different way than before. Even though when he was young he enjoyed all winter sports and other things, but somehow in adulthood all the nice things in winter have somehow been left unrealized along with the rest of life. Now it’s wonderful that the child has brought the stilt hills back to life, Jokikunnas reflects.

The family living in Nurmijärvi also got to spend a snowy Christmas, because they traveled to Lapland to celebrate Christmas. In addition to Ralph, it was also the parents’ first Christmas in Lapland.

– Now I’ve really gotten into a proper winter wonderland feeling, when I’ve been able to take care of the reindeer and marvel at the northern lights and all the sledding hills in the world, Jokikunnas is in the mood.
