Bret had been diagnosed in the summer of 2025 with two rare and potentially lethal diseases. It’s about the Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and of peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL). HLH occurs when the immune system becomes overly active, attacking healthy tissues and organs, with risks of severe inflammation and organ failure. PTCL is an aggressive type of blood cancer involving cells of the immune system, often linked to HLH, complicating diagnosis and treatment. In Bret’s case, the lymphoma was CD30 negative (i.e. the CD30 protein was not present in his T cells), making some targeted therapies are ineffective commonly used.
What are hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and peripheral T-cell lymphoma
There lymphocytic hemophagocytosis (HLH) is a rare syndrome that mainly affects infants and young children. Due to illness the immune system becomes overactiveattacking tissues and organs.
