Dallas Stars forward Roope Hintz was not left speechless when a teammate Jake Oettinger tried to tease Leijon with a twinkle in his eye.
Writing for Stars Mike Heika pointed out at the press conference that the Young Lions were defeated by the United States in the quarterfinals of the U20 World Cup. The American Oettinger was not happy about it.
– The press conference is over, Oettinger joked and made those present burst into laughter.
– Yes, that happened, Hintz said and looked meaningfully towards his teammate.
Oettinger was not speechless.
– Who has won the last two championships? the goalkeeper asked Hintz.
In last year’s tournament, Finland lost to the United States in the final 3–4. Still, Hintz didn’t stop there.
– Do you mean the Olympics? Hintz sneered.
– Oh. Nothing then. I thought we were still talking about the World Youth Championship, a confused Oettinger said and quietly stood up.
Finland is the reigning Olympic champion in men’s ice hockey. In the 2022 Olympic final, the Lions defeated the Russian Olympic Committee team 2–1.
However, Finland does not have two Olympic gold medals. The opportunity to chase one comes in February. Hintz has been selected for the Lions’ Olympic team.
