Even without a win, Domen Prevc has reason to be happy. The Slovenian defends his tour lead. The Germans, however, do not make it to the podium.
Domen Prevc continues to perform strongly at the Four Hills Tournament despite the first defeat and is on the way to overall victory. The Slovenian ski jumper took second place at the third stop in Innsbruck. The Japanese Ren Nikaido secured victory on Bergisel with jumps of 131 and 128 meters. Felix Hoffmann was the best German in fifth place (126.5 and 130.5 meters). Philipp Raimund came twelfth (126 and 125). The Austrian Stephan Embacher came in third place in Innsbruck.
Prevc had previously won by a large margin in both Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. In front of 21,125 spectators, including 9,400 Austrians and 9,400 Germans, he continued his success story. Ten years after his brother Prevc he won the gold eagle; in Innsbruck the high-flyer was on the podium for the eleventh time in a row. He is only two more podium places away from Janne Ahonen’s World Cup record from the winter of 2004/05.
While Hoffmann and Raimund are well on their way to achieving their best tour result, the guarantors of previous success continue to struggle with their form. Andreas Wellinger and Karl Geiger are currently extremely far away from the top of the world. Both were eliminated in the first round. Geiger came 31st, Wellinger took 37th place. Pius Paschke jumped to 28th place.
“Unfortunately I messed up the landing. And that annoys me enormously,” said two-time Olympic champion Wellinger on ZDF. Geiger saw at least “a step in the right direction.” Geiger also made clear how bad things are going with a reaction. The Oberstdorfer wasn’t at all dissatisfied with his jump of 121 meters. “I hope that the direction is the right one and then things will get better again at some point,” said the 32-year-old.
Prevc, Hoffmann and Co. will continue on Monday (from 4.30 p.m. in the t-online live ticker) with the qualification in Bischofshofen. The Slovenian has never reached the podium on the Paul-Außerleitner-Schanze in his career, and now he can add the Golden Eagle to his collection of titles there for the first time.
