The fire in an apartment on Mercuriusplein in Assen has been extinguished, reports a spokesperson for the Drenthe Safety Region. The blazing fire broke out around 2 p.m.
The flat was evacuated and several homes were declared uninhabitable. Residents are temporarily accommodated in De Nieuwe Kolk and replacement housing is being considered for some of the residents.
One person suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital for evaluation.
Nothing is yet known about the cause of the fire.
