The donation campaign that Ecomare started for the glasses leader is a success. “We noticed that the involvement of birdwatchers from all over the world remains high,” says Hilliene Reitsema of Ecomare.

“There were many questions about whether they could do something for the glasses leader or for Ecomare. They have thoroughly enjoyed the glasses over the past year. Then the news that they have been taken care of is hard.”

Back to sea?

For now it is an exciting time for the spectacle leader and caregivers. The question is: can the duck eventually return to the sea?

“He’s still alive. That’s nice, but now the treatment has to work. Most people want him back along the Wadden Sea side near Texel, because that’s where he belonged. There is a risk that he will start eating crabs again and weaken again. Let’s first make sure he regains his weight. Then we’ll see.”
