Is U21 European champion Harvey Elliott moving to Major League Soccer – at least until the summer? According to consistent media reports, this seems to be an option for the 22-year-old attacking midfielder – and possibly the only option in order not to have a completely wasted career year behind him in June. Because: The Liverpool FC professional hasn’t played a role at loan club Aston Villa for weeks and since he was already on the pitch for both clubs, a change within the major European leagues is no longer possible for technical reasons.

Players are not allowed to play for more than two clubs in a season. However, MLS will not be affected as it begins its 2026 season in March. It is considered impossible that Elliott, who was also courted by RB Leipzig in the summer, will get another chance at the Villans. The background is that the club from Birmingham, for whom he has contributed one goal in five games since September, has agreed with Liverpool on a purchase obligation of around 40 million euros.
This takes effect when certain parameters are reached; in some places, around ten missions are reported to be necessary. However, it was emphasized to Transfermarkt.us that the agreement is more nuanced than reported elsewhere. Villa could end the loan early by paying a significant fee. However, Elliott does not play a role in Liverpool coach Arne Slot’s plans, which is why there is no return clause in his contract.
First the “Daily Mail” and later also Fabrizio Romano and “The Athletic” reported on Charlotte FC’s initial interest. The club from the state of North Carolina is said to be interested in loaning Elliott until the summer. From July 1st he could then move back to a club that plays in one of Europe’s top leagues. As Romano reports, the decision is up to the player. However, sources close to Elliott have told TM that as things currently stand, it is unlikely that the offensive talent will move to Charlotte.
