AUDIO: Werder Bremen starts the new year without Boniface (1 min)

The liaison between Werder Bremen and attacker Victor Boniface will most likely no longer lead to a happy ending, but will go down in Bundesliga history as a “wild marriage”. Due to ongoing knee problems and a possible operation, the Nigerian’s further appearances for the Hanseatic League seem to be ruled out.
The last word on Victor Okoh Boniface’s personnel at Osterdeich has not yet been spoken. But the signs point to an early farewell for the 25-year-old loan from league rivals Bayer Leverkusen.
The medical departments of Werder and the factory club, where Boniface is under contract until June 30, 2028, should advise the striker to have an operation. If the offensive player agrees, he will be out for the rest of the season. If Boniface refuses an operation, he will no longer play a role in Werder coach Horst Steffen’s plans due to his permanent knee problems and poor fitness.
Examination in Innsbruck next week
The Nigerian was missing from the start of training on Friday after the short winter break. Bremen’s head of football Peter Niemeyer announced that Boniface will travel to Innsbruck next week to be examined by knee expert Christian Fink with a view to a possible operation. Niemeyer did not provide any information about the striker’s future sporting future.
The loan agreement between Werder and Bayer is originally dated until the end of the season. Although the North Germans were aware of the attacker’s knee problems and had already failed a medical check at AC Milan because of them, they brought him to the Weser beach last summer.
No goal in eleven games
At the time, Werder officials hoped that the 25-year-old could help the team despite his history of injuries. But during his time in Bremen so far, Boniface has primarily stood out for his strange social media posts (“Life is like a shoe, you can’t drink a cow because the earth is a carrot”) rather than for his good sporting achievements.
The former Leverkusen top performer was of no help to the team. The 25-year-old failed to score a goal in his eleven appearances (twice from the start). And if Boniface listens to the doctors’ advice, his time at Werder will end goalless. But much to the displeasure of everyone involved, not without noise…
