The situation in the park quickly escalated during New Year’s Eve. Passers-by and police officers were pelted with heavy fireworks, buildings and furniture were damaged and destroyed.
The police had to withdraw for their own safety. When the police Mobile Unit (ME) arrived, officers were also pelted with fireworks.
Four minors
Ultimately, the police were able to arrest the four underage boys. They have now been interrogated and the Public Prosecution Service will decide whether the boys will be prosecuted. The police are also working with the municipality to determine what measures will be taken against the boys.
The police ask people who have camera images or other relevant information to share them so that they can identify more perpetrators. A large group was involved in the violence in the Westerpark. The police hope to arrest more people involved.
