Liverpool FC’s streak of four wins in the Premier League has ended. The Reds couldn’t get past a goalless draw against Leeds United at Anfield Road. With Florian Wirtz, light and shadow alternated.
Liverpool therefore missed out on moving closer to the leading trio in the English top league. The guests from Leeds, coached by Daniel Farke, were quite happy with the one point.
Respectful success for Leeds United
Their streak of six games unbeaten (two wins, four draws) also continues. United defended 16th place, seven points ahead of the first relegation zone.
In the first leg at the beginning of December, both teams were tied 3-3 in a turbulent, high-scoring game.
Wirtz with average Performance
After a somewhat quieter start, the hosts got better and better into the game at Anfield Road and gained a clear advantage. However, Arne Slot’s team didn’t make enough use of the chances.
Florian Wirtz also adapted to the rather average level. The national player tried hard, but had few good moments. After a little more than an hour, Arne Slot took him off the field and brought on Cody Gakpo.
Big shot from Becker
Daniel Farke’s team, on the other hand, defended diligently, played particularly compact defensively and made things difficult for Liverpool. LFC keeper Alisson Becker was lucky when he made a fatal bad pass to Ethan Ampadu after half an hour. Becker was able to parry the Welshman’s shot at the last moment.
The second section continued in a similar way. Overall, the Reds played too predictably. In the 70th minute, Virgil van Dijk was unlucky when he put a Kofball just wide of the goal.
Calvert-Lewin misses Joker goal
Leeds almost pulled off a surprise coup. However, substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin was centimeters offside when he scored his goal in the 81st minute. Nevertheless, the Farke men hugged each other after the final whistle and celebrated the one point like a small victory.
