Around midnight fireworks were set off on the Ypres Grote Markt. In addition, many bombs and other projectiles could be heard. Several teams from the Arro Ypres police zone arrived on site to close part of the market to traffic so that everything could proceed safely.
Some fireworks were aimed at the closed Christmas market and at one point young people started throwing bombs at each other, but that seemed to go without incident.
