Why so, Fazer Makeinte’s communications director Liisa Eerola?
– We started removing palm oil from confectionery and biscuit products in 2021, and at that time our goal was to have the work completed by the end of 2024. We started the changes with our biggest products, such as Domino and Geisha. The work has progressed well, but not exactly according to the original schedule, replies Eerola by email.
– By the end of 2025, 91 percent of our confectionery and biscuit products will be palm oil-free and we will continue working with the rest of our selection.

According to Eerola, palm oil has been used in products when a naturally solid fat was needed.
– Palm oil is replaced in products with, for example, cocoa butter, rapeseed oil and coconut butter. Due to the technical differences between the products, we cannot replace palm oil with a single alternative, but each product change requires its own recipe solution so that the taste and quality remain excellent. Because of this, recipe changes have been made gradually.

Eerola adds that 99.5 percent of the palm oil used by Fazer Makeiste in 2024 was responsibly produced and traceable through the entire supply chain.
Palm oil is a controversial raw material due to its environmental effects, and its production is, for example, a significant cause of deforestation in the world.
