New Year’s is the season for selling chips. We put 11 different chip bags to a blind test and found a winner that is definitely worth buying.
Which chips should you buy for the New Year’s table? See what the three-person jury thought when they blindly tasted a large number of novelty chips and old acquaintances.
The jury tasted the chips without knowing which products had been selected for the test.
The crispness, good combination of spices and mouthfeel of the chips that made it into the kärkikahini were appreciated by the jury. In the end, the winner was a novelty chip that combines cheese and chili.
Hänni, on the other hand, was left with a chip, the taste of which was too strong and peculiar in the judge’s opinion.
The jury found both delicious options and overly special flavors among the chips. Pasi Liesimaa
1st place: Estrella Juustorinkula Chili Cheese
Rating: 8.5
– Now it’s a bit of a kick! A piece of cheese with a hint of chili! A great option for those who like cheese bites, a little different.
– Fun appearance. Lots of cheese, delicious cheese. And a nice kick after the cheese. It’s sure to evoke emotions. I like it.
– Strong cheese. The smell is bad, but the taste is good, as in cheese crackers in general. A little kick back, here is a mild chili.
2. Estrella Country crisps Garlic, chives and chili
Grade: 8
– Based on the appearance, one of the most functional chips. Good flavor with a bit of a kick. As you taste more, different flavors emerge. Interesting.
– It’s getting really hot now. Lovely composition! Good dip chip, best mouthfeel of all. Lots of flavor. No specific flavor emerges.
– A strong pungent taste. Vinegar or pepper maybe?
3rd place: Taffel Browned Butter & Roasted Garlic
Grade: 8-
– Pretty basic. Discriminating taste. I like the pleated cut, it’s good for dipping.
– Would work with any dip. Pretty boring alone.
– A good basic chip. Crisp texture and good taste.
Iltalehti’s makuraat raw the novelty chips. Pete Anikari
Tied for 4th place: Snack Day Final Cut Sourcream & Onion Flavor
Rating: 7.5
– Now it’s a familiar taste. Traditional, probably sourcream and onion. Like childhood birthday parties!
– Good, basic sour cream onion. Not my favorite taste, but ok.
– Classic chips. This also works for dinner parties without dip. Nice sourcream onion, but a tad weak.
Tied for 4th place: Estrella Creamcheese & Onion
Rating: 7.5
– A basic good chip. Is this sour cream onion too? Does not arouse great emotions.
– I just can’t get the taste, is this something traditional? Kind of familiar.
– A little cheesiness adds a nice touch to the chips. Would work nicely with Ranch or American dip.
5th place: Weekend Snacks Sourcream & Onion
Rating: 7+
– Spices lightly on the surface. The taste disappears quickly. Dry, light chips.
– Good dipping chips! In a way, the taste is quite mild, even a little corn-like. Almost perfect for a side of ranch dip.
– Nothing to say, doesn’t really taste like anything. Would definitely be good for children.

6th place: Kartanon Toorejuusto & herbs
Rating: 7
– Quite good, but based on the appearance, I expected even better. The appearance of an artisan sips, but the taste is a bit bland. There should be more spices and salt.
– Herbal. These give an almost healthy feeling. Nice crunch.
– I don’t recognize the taste, maybe some herb? I wouldn’t buy.
7th place: Coop Ranchers Cut Blackpepper & Chives
Grade: 7-
– Exciting, but perfectly functional taste. I like the spices to come through. The aftertaste is quite long.
– Wonderfully crispy. Good salt. Light pepper taste.
– Strange, as if everything is a bit messed up, what is this?
Shared 8th place: Oikia Spicy Matilda with All Spices
Rating: 6.5
– Freeze and spicy at the same time. No need for a dip. The aftertaste remains in the mouth.
– The appearance resembles bbq or grill chips, but it doesn’t taste like it. A special taste. I don’t really get excited.
– Now the tomato or paprika comes through a little too much. Difficult to come up with a suitable dip for these. Could it work with a pepper dip?
Tied for 8th place: Taffel Ranch Chili Kiss
Rating: 6.5
– Good on its own, but pretty basic. The spices mix together. No further.
– A little kick. Not good for a dip, but I wouldn’t eat it on its own either.
– The appearance promised a lot of flavor and spices, but it tastes like cardboard. It’s hard to tell what flavor this chip is trying to be.
9th place: Estrella Festive Cheddar
Grade: 6
– Maybe not the most usual chip flavor. If you want a change, this could be a good choice.
– Strong cheese taste, too. A bit like the sole of a shoe. Not my favorite.
– It’s strong and strange. Not to my taste at all.
The test included a bunch of different flavored chips. Some of the products were novelties. Pasi Liesimaa
