Marc-André ter Stegen’s move to Girona is on the cards. Now the coach of the Spanish club speaks out.

The future of Marc-André ter Stegen remains unclear. Spanish media are sure that FC Girona is currently ahead in the race for the DFB goalkeeper. A loan for six months is on the cards. Ter Stegen wants to go to the World Cup and needs match practice, Girona wants to get out of the bottom of the table and stabilize the defense – and Barcelona would like to let go of the former captain. So far, neither side has commented on a possible deal. That has now changed.

Girona coach Michel expressed his interest and praised the goalkeeper: “He is a top player. Which club wouldn’t like to have a goalkeeper like ter Stegen?” he said at an awards ceremony.

Ter Stegen lost his regular place at Barcelona after coach Hansi Flick appointed Joan García as the new starting goalkeeper. The former Mönchengladbacher’s contract with Barça runs until 2028, but according to media reports, the club wants to save his million-dollar salary.

For ter Stegen, regular match practice is crucial to maintaining his chances of taking part in the 2026 World Cup. National coach Julian Nagelsmann emphasized in November that Ter Stegen had to “play reasonably well” before the tournament, which doesn’t necessarily have to be at a top club. Nevertheless, the goalkeeper remained determined to stay in Barcelona and prove himself there again. However, since the Catalans’ perspective is unlikely to change, a change is considered likely. And he wouldn’t have to move to go on loan to Girona. The two cities are less than an hour and a half apart.
