The fire started around half past two this afternoon in the Heidenskerkhofstraat in Pittem. A passerby saw smoke and immediately notified the emergency services. The fire brigade was able to get the octogenarian out, but he is in serious condition. He was badly burned and inhaled a lot of smoke: he had to be taken to hospital in life-threatening condition.
The investigation into the fire is still ongoing.
