National player Florian Wirtz reacted to the end of his goal drought at Liverpool FC with great relief. “I was very happy and still am,” said the 22-year-old after his first competitive goal for the English champions in the 2-1 home win against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

“I was confident that one day I would score a goal. But of course I wanted to start scoring goals and providing assists earlier,” added Wirtz. Access had to wait 23 missions for this experience. Wirtz came from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer for a fee of around 150 million euros, and he has recently come under increasing criticism. In terms of market value, the offensive force also recorded a loss for the second time in a row in the most recent transfer market update, the largest in the English upper house. However, in the win against bottom team Wolverhampton, Wirtz played outstandingly and made it 2-0.

Liverpool coach Slot: Wirtz will score a lot of goals

“It was very nice. The feeling on the pitch with the fans around me. I just knew that this day would come. I just try to keep going like that,” said the midfielder on “Sky”. The Premier League is “the toughest league in the world,” Wirtz added to the “BBC”. “I just have to get used to the physical toughness and my teammates in midfield. Every game I feel a little better, so it should continue like this,” explained the young star.

Liverpool coach Arne Slot was confident that Wirtz has now broken the knot. “I think he’s had several good games for us, but I also feel like he’s getting better and better with every single game he plays for us. (…) He’s going to score a lot more goals like this,” the coach said, adding: “Everyone in the football world knows what they say about him, even if they don’t. (…) I’m pretty sure it was a relief for him, I could see that from his reaction after he scored – and I saw the same thing with his teammates. I think they were really pleased that he scored his first goal because in football – perhaps rightly so – we are judged mainly on results and individuals are judged mainly on goals and assists. Sometimes we forget what else there is to do during a game.”

LFC captain Virgil van Dijk also praised the German after the game: “He’s getting more and more used to the intensity and the way we play. He’s very important on the ball and there’s obviously no debate about his qualities. We’re very happy for him, but he should also be very happy with the goal. I think he was pretty tired after 60 minutes or so, that’s what he and we have to work on in order to deliver this performance for 90 minutes every three days.”
