Bundesliga basketball team Hamburg Towers’ short run of success is over after just two wins. In the local Inselparkarena, the Hanseatic League lost the basement duel with bottom-placed Baskets Oldenburg on Saturday with 69:94 (34:40).

The Lower Saxony team moved past head coach Benka Barloschky’s team in the BBL table with their third win of the season. Hamburg, on the other hand, slipped back into a relegation zone. The best throwers in the northern duel were Oldenburg’s Nicholas Tischler with 20 points and Towers point guard Ross Williams, who recorded 17 points.

While the Baskets have their next BBL North duel at Rasta Vechta in two days, the Hamburg team will be playing in the EuroCup in Türkiye against Bahçeşehir Kolej on Tuesday.

Results and table of the Basketball Bundesliga at a glance.

Towers start weakly, but fight their way in

The guests found their way into the game much better and at one point pulled away to eleven points (6./17:6). The Hamburg team, who initially made a lot of missed shots, fought back: especially new signing Williams, who was only signed from Brno on December 5th, ensured that the score was only 17:20 after the first quarter.

And the home team’s run continued: a three-pointer from Zsombor Maronka gave them the first lead in the second quarter (13th/24:22). Now both teams were playing on an equal footing, which was also due to the fact that Oldenburg could no longer build on their strong start. It was only towards the end of the round that the Baskets were able to break away again.

Oldenburg’s Fobbs with three threes in a row

With a three-pointer from Hamburg’s Leonard Thorpe Jr., the Towers started the second half of the game perfectly (21st/37:40). But that remained one of the few highlights from the host’s perspective. A little later, Oldenburg’s Brian Fobbs made it even better with three threes in a row – with this 9-0 run, Oldenburg moved away to 16 points (28th/65:49).

The final quarter began with a 6-0 run by the guests; the Towers didn’t put a ball in the basket for three and a half minutes (34./54:72). Was that the preliminary decision? Yes, because while the Baskets scored reliably, Hamburg missed far too many shots and in the end had to accept the deserved home defeat.

The Mecklenburgers only show their true colors in the final quarter, but can no longer avert bankruptcy against the eleven-time champions.
