With two wins in a row, Liverpool wanted to take victory number three against bottom team Wolverhampton. And that succeeded: also thanks to Florian Wirtz.

The spell is broken: Florian Wirtz scored his first goal as a Liverpool FC player. And that turned out to be extremely important. Because Liverpool narrowly won 2-1 against bottom side Wolverhampton on Saturday afternoon, Wirtz scored the goal to make it 2-0. He even received a standing ovation when he was substituted in injury time.

For Liverpool, the win against Wolverhampton was their third in a row. Overall, the “Reds” have been unbeaten in six league games and are currently in fourth place in the Premier League.

The first emotional moment occurred before kick-off. Diogo Jota’s two sons were allowed to accompany Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk onto the pitch as walk-in children. The Reds player, who died in a car accident, also previously played for Wolverhampton, which is why this game was chosen as a special memory.

After kick-off, the expected picture was seen. Liverpool took the game and put Wolverhampton under pressure. The bottom team stood deep in their own half and waited for a counterattack. Nevertheless, the favorite kept having chances. In the 11th minute, Florian Wirtz played a dream pass to Hugo Ekitiké, but his shot landed on the post.

Ryan Gravenberch did better shortly before the break. The former Bayern player used an assist from Jeremie Frimpong to make it 1-0 (41st). Just a minute later, Wirtz’s redeeming goal came. Ekitiké prevailed against several opponents and then put the ball through to the national player, who poked the ball past the goalkeeper and into the goal.

In the second half, Wolverhampton became more offensive – and were rewarded after a corner. Santiago Bueno scored after a blocked ball (51′). The game was now more exciting again and Liverpool pulled away in the final minutes. But there shouldn’t be another goal.
