Wrestler Anna Schell won gold at the European Championships in Budapest. Luisa Niemesch took silver. For both athletes it is the best result of their careers so far. Sandra Paruszewski also secured bronze.
Schell defeated Turkey’s Buse Cavusoglu Tosun in the final of the weight class up to 72 kilograms. In 2019, the athlete from SC Isaria Unterföhring won European Championship silver, and the 28-year-old has already finished third at the World Championships twice in her career. Stefanie Stüber won the last European Championship title for the German women’s team 15 years ago in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Niemesch lost in the final of the class up to 62 kilograms to Olympic bronze medalist and former world champion Taybe Yusein from Bulgaria. The 26-year-old from SV Germania Weingarten was once World Cup runner-up among the juniors. Last year she narrowly missed her second Olympic participation after 2016.
Paruszewski from AV Sulgen prevailed in the small final of the 57-kilogram class against Anhelina Lysak from Poland. Before the final weekend of the European Championships in Hungary, the German team has four medals.
