With the cold air in the country it really feels like winter has started. Although the temperature is still above zero, it can feel very cold due to the wind chill.
But what about those two measuring degrees? RTV Drenthe weather woman Grieta Spannenburg explains that the perceived temperature is there to clarify what the weather feels like.
“It is an indication of how the orphan situation comes across,” the weather forecaster explains. Something that is also done with language. “For example, when we say cutting wind, water cold and inclement weather.” Everyone has an idea of what it feels like outside.
The actual temperature is measured in the air. But to determine the perceived temperature, several factors must be taken into account. Like the wind and humidity.
“Most wind chill tables work with wind speed,” says Spannenburg. “The harder the wind blows, the lower the perceived temperature.” And therefore how cold the actual temperature feels. There is a disclaimer, because: “Everyone experiences that differently, of course.”
The wind now means that people find it cold outside. And that takes some getting used to, says the weather woman. “We have had southerly winds with mild humidity for weeks. We now have to adjust to the new reality.”
It is important to dress appropriately for the weather. “The wind cools the warm skin,” Spannenburg explains. The perceived temperature can help you choose your outfit for the day. But: “You can also do that with a wet finger, it’s not very precise.”
The predictions for Christmas are quickly putting an end to hopes for a white Christmas. It will be dry, sunny and cold. RTV Drenthe weatherman Roland van der Zwaag previously said: “Expectant weather, but no white Christmas.”
Moderate frost was predicted for last night at around -5 degrees. So who knows, maybe the night frost will ensure that we can quickly remove the skates from the grease. And don’t forget to dress according to the actual temperature.
